The U.S. Capitol in Washington DC was locked down Thursday after multiple accounts of gunfire outside the building.
Both the House and Senate were locked down, with press reports suggesting the gunshots came after police chased a car.
“We’ve locked the doors. We closed the window shades. And we are awaiting further instructions,” Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) told MSNBC. “We’re more or less cut off here. We’re watching TV and just trying to figure out what happened.”
The shooting comes as Congress was debating re-opening the federal government and avoiding hitting the debt ceiling.
The AP reported one police officer was injured and that the suspect was in custody.
